Student Academies & Summer Programs

Advanced STEM Robotics Club

It's way more than building robots. First Tech Robot Challenges students use the Engineering Design Process to work with metal designs and electrical wiring to build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Students learn how to work as a team within respectful core values, build interpersonal skills and leadership skills that are applied to real-life experiences. The robot kits are reusable from year to year and can be coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming. 

Art

Students foster critical thinking skills and creative experiences within the visual arts including painting, drawing, mask-making, fiber arts, print making, and more.

Aviation

In this academy, students learn more about the world of aviation, careers in aviation, and aerospace. Using project-based activities, students explore the science of kites, hot air balloons, rockets, planes, and gliders. With parent approval, students can also participate in MMK's Aviation Summer Academies and flight programs. 

Beginning STEM Robotics Club

Students apply science, technology, engineering, and math concepts (plus a big dose of imagination) to develop solutions to real-world challenges. They also design, build, and program LEGO MINDSTORMS-based robots to perform autonomous "missions" on a playing field. Along the way, they develop critical thinking, team building, and essential soft skills.

Chess Competition Club

Playing chess teaches students important life skills and is scientifically proven o raise IQ through growing dendrites. Through learning basic moves and strategies (skills will increase with practice), students may experience improved problem solving/analytical skills, improved foresight, improved decision making, and better planning skills. Chess teaches perseverance and has many other benefits that work to improve overall student achievement.

Financial Literacy 101

This beginners academy uses self-empowerment and character-building tools to teach students basic money management skills, and credit responsibility, and lays a solid foundation for learning how to manage money. Money management translates into important life skills.

Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurial & Life Skills Cash Flow Club

CASHFLOW is a fun-filled financial literacy game that starts students I a typical 9-to-5 job and takes them on a journey to build up an arsenal of assets that will propel them into the fast track where real wealth is built. Students sharpen math skills by managing their lives through financial statements; they learn how money works in the real world and how to start their own small businesses. 

Law & Justice Academy

Students gain an understanding of the critical components of the County's criminal justice system, and how the member agencies (Public Defender, Sheriff/Coroner, District Attorney, Probation, Fire Protection District) work toward the common goal of judicial justice. Participating students gain exposure to guest speakers from each sector of the Law & Justice Group, visit the Superior Courts, engage in a mock trial, visit the High Desert Detention Center, and conduct a customized crime scene investigation (CSI) using analytical and math skills.

NBA Math Hoops Competition Club

NBA Math Hoops is a comprehensive community program featuring a basketball board game, mobile app, and curriculum, which allows students to learn fundamental math skills through the game of basketball. All program content is developed in alignment with Common Core State Standards and 21st Century Learning Skills,  and has been shown to improve students' foundational math and social-emotional skills.

Scholarship Academy

This academy assists college bound students (students who have strong desires to attend colleges, universities, and career technical education institutions) to receive an education as close to debt-free as possible. Students learn strategies to prepare for college, University of California eligibility requirements for free tuition, and how to write winning national and local scholarships.
